Digitalarkivet and the reference to the church records
Edited post from 5 February 2017 (20 August 2020)
Digitalarkivet.no (National Archives of Norway’s official website) have their own way of showing the source information for their different resources.
I am in this post referring to the church books, and how the Archive/archivists wants it, and how I want it. The Archive/archivists use their own reference to the records, a reference not at all useful to us common people. I want the geography, parish, subparish etc for the church book, not a cryptic Archival reference. But of course, I understand the archivists, they work different than what we are doing.
To be able to see the more user friendly reference to the church records, you need to be signed in to the digitalarkivet.no and then change one of the settings.
I like to see the reference like this – as here I can see the parish and the sub parish:
but the default reference to the church record is shown like this:
(only the main parish is showing, but the church book is actually for the sub parish Heni: (as seen above):
To be able to change the default settings, you need to create an account (totally free and harmless, they don’t sell your e-mail address, and they don’t send you any e-mails. Create an account, and then sign in:
After signed in, go to the church book view: and find the «settings»:
Chose the «old program version», then start browsing your parishes, and you will be able to see which parish/churches you are working with.
Happy Hunting!
